Cation Ordering and Magnetic Properties of Layered Tellurides

DOI

We have prepared a new non-stoichiometric series Cr2-xInxGe2Te6. X-ray diffraction data can be indexed on the rhombohedral unit cell of the end-member (x=0) phase. This adopts a layered structure containing an ordered array of Cr3+ ions and Ge2 dimers. We wish to study the change in cation distribution as Cr3+ is progressively replaced by In3+, by collecting neutron diffraction data at 298K, for use in a combined X-ray/neutron Rietveld analysis. We will also use variable temperature measurements to study the evolution of the ferromagnetic (Tc=61K) structure of the end member phase, with increasing levels of dilution of Cr3+. In addition, we will investigate reasons for a region of low crystallinity in the middle of the compositional range and study the structure through an anomaly in the electrical transport properties. This experiment is part of the project of a final-year PhD student.
