Neural data were recorded with a Neuralynx tetrode system (DL 4SX 32ch System, Neuralynx Inc., Bozeman, MT, USA)

Behavioral data were recorded with an optical encoder (USB4 Encoder Data Acquisition USB Device, US Digital, Vancouver, WA, USA)

Butterfly brains were scanned with a confocal laser microscope (Leica TCS SP2, Wetzlar, Germany)
