Magneto-structural order in the breathing pyrochlore spinel LiGaCr4O8s

DOI

Normally, magnetic materials at low temperature can be described in terms of magnetic order; a repeating pattern of magnetic moments which satisfy the internal interactions of the system. Frustration induced by the lattice connectivity (for instance, if it contains triangular motifs) can make the system unable to simultaneously satisfy these interactions, and can therefore lead to the suppression of order and adoption of more exotic magnetic states. We propose to use WISH to investigate the nature of the magneto-structural order in LiGaCr4O8, where magnetic chromium ions reside on vertices of corner-sharing tetrahedra. In this material, the frustration is relieved by the coupling to the lattice, which induces structural distortions. Understanding the nature of these will shed light on the interplay of frustration and lattice degrees of freedom in a broad class of frustrated magnets.
