Proposal to determine the origin of the effects of electric fields on the muon response in composite insulation

DOI

In the previous proposal we examined the ALC response of components of the complex dielectric under externally applied electric fields (EEF). We saw a shift in the asymmetry at the ALC peak and have proposed two possible cases as to the cause. In one case the electrons left behind when the muon thermalises are affected by the EEF, and in the other a redistribution of the spin density causes a change in the hyperfine coupling. We propose to establish which of these is the cause of the shift seen, or whether it is a combination of both by reversing the EEF direction, and by fully characterizing the ALC spectrum. Once completed this will consolidate our theories as to the origin of the effect of EEF on the dielectric, and provide a sound basis for publication. Additionally, we would like to perform the same experiments at higher fields in order to determine if the trends seen continue.
