Measurement of Residual Stresses in Side-Punched Single Edge Notched Bend Specimens

Residual stresses have been generated, mechanically, in single edge notched bend specimens by side-punching ahead of sharp notches. Given that this is a novel method of mechanically generating residual stresses, it is important that it can be validated experimentally. The aim is to measure residual stresses in all three principal directions along the centre of the uncracked ligament in four specimens. This will allow the residual stresses ahead of the sharp notches to be characterised, and also consider the effect of crack extension into the residual stress field. These measurements are integral to the outcome of a wider program of work. This work is to consider characterising the effect of residual stresses on fracture toughness. The aim is then for this to be used in the modification of current failure assessment methodologies widely used within the nuclear industry.
