Cardinalfish (Apogonidae) opsin genes

Visual opsin gene evolution was investigated in cardinalfishes (Apogonidae), coral reef fish that show diurnal and nocturnal activity, using RNAseq to identify opsin gene diversity and expression. Gene repertoires and expression reflect both adaptation to dim light and bright light, suggesting that a compromise is being made between visual adaptations to the different light conditions experienced during these activity times.
