Boundary Layer Turbulence and Abyssal Recipes (BLT): Microstructure and Dye Survey Datasets

DOI

These data were collected as part of the Boundary Layer Turbulence and Abyssal Recipes (BLT Recipes) Experiment which focused on near-bottom processes within a continental slope canyon on the eastern side of the Rockall Trough, off Ireland. These datasets contain mooring and profiler data from dye and microstructure surveys conducted in June/July 2021 and August 2022. A fluorescein dye release was measured using the Fast CTD, a tethered profiler with a Seabird SBE49 CTD, a custom micro-conductivity probe, a Turner C-FLUOR fluorometer and an altimeter. We also conducted 5 microstructure turbulence stations using the epsi-fish profiler which measured temperature, pressure and salinity from a Seabird 49 CTD, height above bottom from a custom altimeter and kinetic energy and thermal dissipation rates measured from airfoil and thermistor probes, respectively. A McLane Moored Profiler was deployed for one week during the dye release and was outfitted with a Seabird SBE52 CTD, a Falmouth Scientific Inc. acoustic current meter, a Turner C-FLUOR fluorometer and two thermistor probes. The McLane Moored Profiler was re-deployed, without the fluorometer and thermistor probes until October 2021. In August 2022, another 6 microstructure stations were conducted with the epsi-fish profiler.
