Understanding the plant wax-surfactant interaction process and the influence of surfactants upon the wax transport properties is crucial for the development of more efficient and effective pesticide and fungicide formulations. Thus, a need for greater understanding of both the morphology and structure of the cuticular lipid compounds which form the waxy 'barrier' upon the surface of all crops is required. We will carry out a series of solid/liquid NR measurements to characterise the composition and morphology of the nano-particles which make up the main constituents of wheat and barley waxes, and observe how each of the components influences the transport properties of the wax barrier. This will give us a better insight into the inter-facial processes of wax-surfactant interactions at the molecular level.
