Selection of a bacterial 16S rRNA gene primer set for Arctic Ocean microbiome studies

A collection of seawater, sea ice and sediment samples from the Arctic Ocean was used for assessing performance of two universal primer sets in representing bacterial diversity of the Arctic marine environment. The extracted genomic DNA was isolated and the hypervariable regions V3-V4 (341F - 785R) and V4-V5 (515F - 926R) of the 16S rRNA were amplified and sequenced using Illumina MiSeq platform in a 2 × 300 bp paired-end run.
