Images of the calyx and tissue retraction of the juvenile cold-water coral Caryophyllia (Caryophyllia) huinayensis exposed to increased sediment load

The images show individuals of juvenile Caryophyllia (Caryophyllia) huinayensis in the zenithal view (calyx) at the beginning (week 0), in the middle (week 6) and at the end (after 12 weeks) of a sediment exposure experiment with a natural, a 100-fold and a 1000-fold increased sediment concentration, as well as from the lateral view after 6 and 12 weeks. Pictures were taken using a stereomicroscope (LEICA MZ 16, Leica Microsystems GmbH, Wetzlar, Germany) and the software Leica Acquire 3.4.1. Build 9072 © 2006- 2013 (Leica Microsystems GmbH, Wetzlar, Germany).

Filenames include the sediment concentration (NatConc, 100xConc, 1000xConc), the individual ID of the coral (e.g., p.59) and its orientation on the screw (h: horizontal and s: vertical), the date of capture (e.g., 20210417 for 17th of April 2021) and the image ID with capture orientation (a. zenithal, b: lateral view).This dataset was generated within the framework of the co-operation between the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (programme: 'Changing Earth – Sustaining our Future', Topic 4.2), the Huinay Scientific Field Station, European Union's Horizon 2020 iAtlantic project (Grant Agreement No. 818123) and the Centre for Marine Environmental Sciences of the University of Bremen.NatConc = natural concentration (0.0042 ml/l)100xConc =100-fold natural concentration (0.42 ml/l)1000xConc = 1000-fold natural concentration (4.2 ml/l)
