Spin dynamics in the zig-zag ladder beta-CaCr2O4

DOI

We propose to investigate the spin dynamics in the frustrated antiferromagnet beta-CaCr2O4. Its structure consist in one dimensional chains of Cr+3 forming the legs of zig-zag ladders. The frustration in this magnetic system arises mostly from the competition between nearest-neighbor (J1, between legs) and next-nearest-neighbor (J2, along the leg) exchange interactions. According to theroretical work, the zig zag ladder can show a range of exotic quantum ground states, depending on the spin S, on the value of the frustration parameter J2/J1, as well as the respective signs of J1 and J2. For instance, a competition is expected between a quantum-disordered gapped ground state with commensurate spin correlations and a semi-classical helimagnetic incommensurate state. We anticipate this spin dynamics study to help us in determining the relevant magnetic interactions in this material.
