Propagation of magnetic excitations on one dimensional spin chains

DOI

For one-dimensional quantum spin chain systems recent experimental and theoretical studiesindicate unexpectedly large, in some cases diverging spin and heat transport coefficients.Heat and spin transport are coupled by scattering of phonons with magnetic excitations likefor example magnons. Local probes, like e.g. muSR can indirectly measure the spinconductivity, i.e the way magnetic excitations propagate on spin chains. In this proposal we want to study spin transport in SrCuO2 by introducing varying amounts of "dirt", nickel (S=1 impurity) and calcium (bond disorder). The aim is to eventually understand how spin transport is affected by different kinds of impurities and to clarify and improve available data for comparisson with theoretical results.
