Structural distortions and magnetism in the layered oxide sulfide Sr2MnO2Cu1.5S2

DOI

This proposal aims to exploit the superior flux on the upgraded HRPD coupled with the intrinsic high resolution to correlate the magnetic structure and the crystal structure of the layered oxysulfide Sr2MnO2Cu1.5S2. This is intended as a test of the superior flux available at short d-spacings and is therefore proposed as a commissioning experiment. The CE-type magnetic structure of the MnO2 sheets suggests that there should be charge-ordering between Mn2+ and Mn3+ oxidation states. Lower resolution measurements than those available on HRPD do not give clear evidence for such charge ordering, thus the high resolution of HRPD is required. The presence of a symmetry-lowering charge-ordering distortion would result in a large number of atomic parameters which will require the newly available high flux at short d-spacings for accurate refinement.
