Field-induced phases in MnWO4.

PID

We suggest to study the field-induced magnetic phases in MnWO4 single crystal in fields along the easy magnetization direction (approximately along the [2 0 1]). This system orders below TN = 13.5 K with two additional phase transitions around T1 = 8 K and T2 = 12.5 K. The ferroelectric phase AF2 (between T1 and T2) has propagation vector qAF2 = (-0.214 œ 0.457) and is cycloidal. AF3 just below TN has the same propagation vector but is collinear and sine-wave modulated. The AF1 below T1 is commensurate with qAF1 = (-Œ œ œ). The field induced phases HF, IV and V have propagation vectors close to qAF1 , qAF2 and yet unknown, respectively. The main objective is to determine the details of the three magnetic structure in order to be able to derive a precise model for ferroelectricity appearing only in the AF2 and IV phases and to explain mechanism that leads to memory effects found across AF1-AF2-HF-IV phase transitions. We ask for 6 days.
