Investigation of the microstructure of dipeptide hydrogels

The properties of gels formed from the self-assembly of small molecules depend on the properties of the fibres into which the molecules have assembled as well as the number and type of cross-links. The most important parameter seems to be the arrangement of the fibres and crosslinks in space, with the gaps between fibres being an indication of the gel network. We have previously used LoQ and SANS2D to probe gels formed using dipeptide based gelators and it is clear from this data that we need to look at even wider Q ranges to truly understand these networks. This is essential if we are to be able to link the properties of the gels to the networks and hence to be able to generate design rules.
