pH Responsive Polymer Blend Surfaces

Polymers, end-functionalised with carboxylic acid (COOH) groups do not normally segregate to film surfaces due to the high surface energy of these functionalities. However, we have recently found that COOH adsorption can be induced by annealing films in a polar non-solvent, leaving a surface that is decorated with polar functionalities. It is known that the contact angle of water on carboxylic acid functionalised polymers depends upon the pH of the contact fluid. Here we will investigate the converse case: Does the pH of the contacting fluid influence the adsorption of COOH functionalised polybutadienes (PB). Neutron reflectometry followed by SCFT modelling will be used to quantify carboxy-functionalised PB-COOH adsorption in PB films as a function of blend composition, pH of annealing environment.
