Investigation of the phases and chemical composition of early Roman Victoriati coins

DOI

The proposal involves the non-invasive measurement of ancient Roman coins by ToF diffraction techniques. A well selected series of Victoriati are to be measured in order to understand the nature of the known variability in specific gravity of these coins, that were mint in a restricted period (215-170 BC). The scarce analyses available from sacrificed coins indicate that the variation could derive from Ag-Cu alloying, and the confirmation on a wider series of samples could provide indication of the actual value of the coins in ancient times.
