Proton dynamics of water approaching the supercooled phase

DOI

In a recent DINS experiment (RB520101) we have possibly evidenced a new anomaly of supercooled water. Data at T = 269 and 271 K show clear differences in the proton neutron Compton profiles, giving different line shape of the momentum distribution and values of the mean kinetic energy, : these are higher than that of ambient water. Similar results have already been found in water confined in porous glasses or at the surface of a protein, nevertheless in those cases the interaction with the confining substrate could justify sensible modifications of the potential felt by the proton. The result of RB520101 is instead obtained in bulk water and changes of the potential landscape seen by protons can only be due to the peculiarities of supercooled water. We request beamtime for a continuation experiment, aimed at DINS studies of H2O from 323 to 272 K.
