The structure of nanographenes in solution

DOI

In this proposal we will study the structure of metal-ammonia solutions containing single graphene sheets by exploiting H/D isotopic labelling in conjunction with NIMROD¿s unique ability to probe structural length-scales ranging from 50nm to <0.1nm. Our aim is to determine the solvation around the graphene sheets, while simultaneously measuring their plate-plate structure. It is our understanding that NIMROD is the only instrument in the world that will allow us to do this. Controlled amounts of ammonia will be added incrementally to weighed nanographite and metal (K), and the diffraction pattern measured until the graphene salt completely dissolves in solution. This will be monitored via the long range (00l) Bragg peaks and also via the small angle signal.
