Magnetic structure of the potential multiferroic GdCrO3

DOI

Because of the potential applications of multiferroicity, the discovery of a new multiferroic (MF) material is invariably met with great enthusiasm in the condensed matter community. A few months ago, ambiguous MF behaviour was identified in the distorted perovskite GdCrO3 in bulk and thin film samples. Our own measurements have confirmed the presence of a polar phase below 2.3K. This temperature corresponds to the one of 3 magnetic phases already identified, through magnetization measurements, the lowest one. However, no magnetic structure for this material, necessary to understand the mechanism behind the MF properties, has been reported thus far. We propose to undertake such a study on the TS-2 diffractometer WISH. For the study to be successful, GdCrO3, with a well understood high pressure synthesis process, needs to be made with isotopic Gd, for which we wish to apply for funds.
