Determination of the magnetic interactions of low-dimensional binary metal thiocyanates

Magnetic molecular framework materials, where the magnetic metal centres are linked together by molecules rather than single atoms, are a very exciting class of materials, as they can combine the interesting features of molecular frameworks: porosity, flexibility and modularity with useful magnetic behaviour. Thiocyanate (NCS–) is particularly interesting as a linker as it is unusually effective at transmitting magnetic coupling, but very little is known about the magnetic behaviour of the simple binary metal thiocyanates. In this experiment, we will use inelastic neutron spectroscopy to measure the dynamics of the magnetic spins. This will allow us to understand the magnetic interactions in these frameworks, and so will guide our design of new, functional magnetic materials.
