Field dependence of Magnetic Excitations in the Hyperkagome Spin Liquid Candidate, Yb3Ga5O12

DOI

We are proposing to characterize the short range magnetic correlations and dynamics in a single crystal of Yb3Ga5O12, a geometrically frustrated spin liquid candidate. We have performed preliminary time-of-flight neutron scattering measurements on our crystal in zero-field, and have found interesting features that can only be fully understood by applying a magnetic field. The proposed experiment will lead to the first published neutron scattering study on this unusual material. This study will be definitive in elucidating the nature of the low temperature magnetic states in Yb3Ga5O12. This proposal is currently a part of the beam time competition for CNCS at the SNS, but due to the 6:1 oversubscription rate at CNCS it is unlikely that it will be successful. If we obtain beam time at both ISIS and SNS, we will inform ISIS as soon as possible.
