Response of PAN-pyrene-micelle based sensors to metal ions

DOI

We have been studying the solution interactions leading to formation of solid polymer-surfactant films at the air-solution interface. We want to use the mesostructures in the films as hosts for PAN/pyrene/micelle based sensors for metal ions in order to make solid-state metal ion sensors. In this experiment we wish to characterise the encapsulation of PAN and pyrene in the micelles in polymer solution, in the presence of metal ions of various charge. This will enable us to determine changes in micelle shape and interactions with the polymer due to the PAN binding metal ions which will affect the structure and interactions in the films and the sensor behaviour. The results from these solution studies will be combined with reflectivity studies on the films in similar conditions to understand the relationship between structure, film formation and sensor function in this system.
