The structure of ceramides in a model membrane environment

DOI

This proposal aims to investigate the structure of ceramide, an important component of cellular membranes in a mimic membrane environment. After assessment of this molecule in its mode environment, water will be added in small quantities (as the ceramide molecule is sparingly soluble in pure water) to ascertain the nature of the water hydrogen bonding network in this model membrane system. Understanding these structure will aid in the understanding of the physical properties of biological membranes which are responsible for many cellular processes such as drug delivery and signal transduction for communication between different cells in multicellular organisms.
