The Lives of Young Carers in England, 2015-2016: TNS Omnibus Survey Data formed part of a programme of research designed to help inform the implementation of the 2015 Care Act requiring local authorities to identify and assess the support needs of any young carer – no matter how much or what type of care they provide. The study consisted of: I. A survey of parents of young carers aged five to 17, together with an interview with the young carer themselves if they were aged 11 or over; and II.A ‘comparison survey’ of parents of all children aged five to 17, again together with a young person’s interview if they were aged 11 or over. The surveys were conducted as part of the TNS Face to Face Omnibus survey. The rationale for using the Omnibus and interviewing young carers from age 11 upwards is contained in the study report. More information about this programme of research can be found on the Gov.uk The lives of young carers in England webpage.

Main Topics:

The main topics covered in this survey data are: parent and young persons’ caring responsibilities, perceptions of those responsibilities and comparison to young people who were not carers; perceptions of mental and physical health and experiences in school and outside the home; and demographics.
