Impact of Stereochemistry and Diamine Structure on Absorption of Constructed Chiral Gemini-like Surfactants at the Air-Water Interface

DOI

Chiral gemini surfactants containing stereogenic centers and two amphiphilic moieties, not only maintain the chiral properties, but also exhibit stronger aggregation properties, a range of different aggregation behaviors and aggregate morphologies. Difficulties in synthesis and lack of powerful analysis techniques have limited our knowledge of their self-assembly at air-water interface. This proposal is about emulating their properties through the formation of chiral gemini-like surfactants by the interaction of a single alkyl chain surfactant with bola-type connecting molecules, chiral diamines. We request here neutron reflection beam time to obtain the essential structural characterization of such mixtures, to investigate the role of stereochemistry on their absorption at the air-water interface.
