The use of INS to investigate reactions relevant to Fischer-Tropsch catalysis

In collaboration with an industrial partner, the PI is seeking to use INS to help characterise a series of catalysts active for the important Fischer-Tropsch (F-T) process. As part of this continuing study, it is proposed to examine reactions active over an iron F-T catalyst operating in a relatively low pressure regime. Under these conditions the catalyst acts as a CO hydrogenation catalyst, which results in the production of methane. A dual-track approach will be adopted where both forward and reverse reactions at the catalyst surface will be examined. MAPS will provide data in the 1600-4000 cm-1 region, whilst a linked application for TOSCA seeks to access the 30-1600 cm-1 region. The latter studies are described within a separate application.
