Non invasive characterization through time of flight neutron diffraction of traditionally produced Japanese steel

In order to extend our level of knowledge towards Oriental Arms and Armour, we have selected five samples specifically smelted, forged, characterized, and traded by Hitachi Corporation for traditional production of Japanese swords and for traditional Japanese kitchen knives. We point out that the data so obtained will be used for the quantitative characterization of the phase distribution through Rietveld refinement: the micro structural properties of the ferrite phase will be determined through the peak shape analysis of the diffraction data by using the GSAS+EXPGUI code, while the edge shape analysis of the transmitted data will be analysed using the RITS code.
