Magnetic excitations in mesoporous hematite

DOI

We have recently prepared mesoporous forms of various metals oxides. In some cases the imposition of a mesostructure changes other properties of the material significantly. One example of such a change is found in mesoporous hematite (alpha-Fe2O3). The bulk material undergoes a Morin transition at 265 K from a canted antiferromagnetic structure, to another form of antiferromagnetic order with no canting. The mesoporous form shows no such transition down to 1.5 K. This transition arises from a competition between different forms of exchange and single-ion anisotropy originating from ligand-field terms. In order to explore how the mesostructure might influence this transition, we propose to perform inelastic neutron scattering measurements to determine zone-centre excitations that can be related to such terms in the Hamiltonian.
