A search for transverse phonons in DNA

DOI

We have begun an experimental program to investigate the denaturing of DNA, using scattering techniques, to test statistical mechanical models for the moelcule. It is believed that many of the predictions of the models can be tested by examining the temperature dependence of transverse, optic phonon modes. Phonons have been measured in DNA in the past, however these have been longitudinal modes, not transverse. We therefore propose to search for the transverse modes using MARI as a prelude to charaterizing their temperature dependence.
