Investigation of short range magnetic correlations in CeIr3Si2 using SR

CeIr3Si2 reveals highly anisotropic bulk properties with two magnetic transitions at TN1 ~ 3.9 K and TN2 ~ 3.1 K. The overall crystal electric field (CEF) splitting of the J=5/2 ground multiplet of this compound is unusually large, 1600 K. Among Ce based compounds, CeIr3Si2 is probably the second compound, having a giant CEF splitting comparable to the intermultiplet splitting of 3250 K. The magnetic entropy of CeIr3Si2 at TN1 ~ 3.9 K is only 0.5Rln2 and recovers the full value of Rln2 at 30K, indicating the presence of Kondo effect and short range magnetic correlations (SRMC) above TN1. Muon spin rotation (mUSR) is a powerful tool to investigate especially complex and weakly magnetic ground states. We therefore propose to carry out muSR measurements to probe SRMC above TN1, as well as magnetic ground state below TN1, in CeIr3Si2 using the MUSR spectromer.
