Search for magnetic ordering in the high pressure metallic state of LuNiO3 & YNiO3

DOI

It has very recently been shown that Mott-insulators located at the crossover regime closer to the itinerant side, such as RNiO3, undergo a pressure-induced transition into a metallic state, in which charge ordering and possibly magnetic ordering persist. To search for magnetic ordering in such an unusual metallic state, we propose to perform high pressure neutron diffraction measurements on LuNiO3 and YNiO3 at about 10 GPa and 110 K. This investigation should provide a deeper understanding of metal insulator transition and allow for a critical test of first principles band structure calculations.
