Data of 'Chemical fate of persistent organic pollutants in the arctic: Evaluation of simplebox'

In our paper ‘Chemical fate of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in the arctic: Evaluation of simplebox’ (10.1016/j.scitotenv.2020.137579), we used SimpleBox multimedia fate model (v4.0) to estimate the fate of POPs in the Arctic. We evaluated its performance by comparing the estimations to measurements in Arctic air (1990-2015) and seawater (1985-2015). Model performance for the air compartment was reasonable as estimated concentrations were generally within a factor of five of measured concentrations. SimpleBox suggested higher POP concentrations in Arctic oceans than in temperate oceans, contrary to the few measured data.

This dataset contains the measured and estimated POP concentrations in Arctic air and seawater. Measured air concentrations were derived from the data warehouse for the Global Monitoring Plan (GMP) for POPs under the Stockholm Convention (http://www.pops-gmp.org/visualization-2014). Measured seawater concentrations were obtained through an extensive literature search. Estimated POP concentration were generated by SimpleBox multimedia fate model (v4.0).
