Templating of titania films in cationic-anionic surfactant polymer solutions

In this proposal we wish to continue our recent work using polyelectrolyte-surfactant films as templates for inorganic structures, in this case titania. Polyelectrolyte-surfactant films at the air-solution interface can be mineralised by addition of inorganic precursor to the subphase solution. Films containing polymer, surfactant and the inorganic species then grow at the solution interface. The incorporation of polymer in the films results in much stronger and thicker membranes than when surfactants are used with titania precursors alone, which may be due to polymer remaining occluded in the inorganic walls after the surfactant is removed. Here we propose to investigate structures produced using mixed cationic-anionic surfactant-polymer systems in order to extend our previous studies on silica to titania as part of our investigation of materials for use in dye sensitised solar-cells.
