Material Renaissance : Costs and Consumption in Italy, 1300-1650

DOI

Main Topics:

The dataset is comprised by information concerning prices, valuations, wage rates and exchange rates drawn from documentary sources from Italy over the period c. 1380 - 1650; together with supporting information defining moneys, types of commodity, types of work paid for and so on. The dataset formed part of a project that sought to explore: the comparative prices of different types of goods in Renaissance Italy over both time and place, the market for domestic goods such as food and clothing, the market for objects now considered art (particularly panel paintings, metalwork and antiques), the nature of the relationship between market place and patronage, whether art objects were brought and sold in different ways that distinguished them from other commodities, the gendered nature of Renaissance consumption, how social communities of buyers and sellers were formed and the different means by which objects were acquired in courts and republican communities.
